The renovation of this expansive apartment works to pair south Florida’s colorful, modernist architectural history with a sense of domestic intimacy. This North Miami Beach ocean-front condo was redesigned to host a multi-generational family and visiting relatives. A mixture of smaller, more cohesive spaces reforms the monumentality of the original form. Arranged throughout an otherwise open floor plan, hall passages function as channels to maximize the amount of light penetrating an extensive interior bereft of window exposure. The interior design takes cues from the Art Deco movement to ensure a sense of place. The use of stone, terrazzo, plaster, and natural wood furthers the dialog with local architecture and the geography of Miami as a whole.
