Amber Road Trekking Cabins
Amber Road Trekking Path, Latvia
Inspired by Latvian folktale “The Giant and Pastaris”, once told by firelight and passed through the generations, these cabins along the Amber Road Trekking Path at the Baltic Sea provide a welcoming space for people to gather, form memories, and tell stories of their own. Four symbols emerge throughout the tale -- bull hair, fish scale, feather, and ant leg-- inform the design and results in a series of cabins that can be built in the multiple environments that the Baltic shore has to offer.
Overlapping volumes create a series of unique spaces such as a sleeping loft and both a protected deck for gathering and an uncovered patio. The steep pitched roofs allow water to be collected to an interior cistern. The amber colored window beckons hikers along the shore acting as a reminder of the unique geological history.
